The Recruitment Process
Once your completed application form is received, a Human Resource Officer will contact you to acknowledge receipt of your application. Various initial verifications will be made and may include the following:
An assessment of the application form to ensure all relevant information has been included.
An assessment of your Immigration Status.
Police background checks, for both you and members of your household.
At this stage, your application will be reviewed by a panel of Senior Officers and a Human Resources Representative taking into consideration your qualifications and other criteria required.
You will be advised in writing of the outcome. If successful, you will be invited to sit the Police Entrance Examination (PEE).
In order to provide us with a relevant benchmark for all candidates, the Police Entrance Examination (PEE) is conducted. The PEE is a written entrance test designed to assess a variety of skills that you may reasonably be expected to use as a Police Officer. The Test consists of four separately timed sub-tests each designed to measure a different ability. These are:
The ability to spell words and construct sentences correctly.
The ability to record information quickly and correctly.
The ability to solve numerical problems accurately.
The ability to reason logically when given facts about events.
If you fail to achieve a pass in the written PEE test, you will be informed that the application process stops at that point. You will be eligible to retake the test the following year but you cannot take the test more than twice in total.
References – Current and previous employer references will be interviewed.
Successful completion of the above will result in you proceeding to stage four.
MEDICAL
Upon your success at the PEE, you will be made aware of your performance and will be required to complete a medical examination at a local Private or Government Clinic or Hospital. A licensed Medical Doctor will confirm your fitness suitability for the role of a Police Constable.
The Medical Examiner will also make an initial assessment based on your completed Medical History Form.
FITNESS TEST
The fitness test is one of the stages that cause the most concern for many potential recruits. The two elements of the test are Endurance and Dynamic Strength. Before taking the test, you will be asked whether you have any illness, injury or medical problem that could affect your performance. A decision will be made as to whether or not the test should proceed. If you are in any doubt as to whether or not you should take the test, please seek advice from your Doctor beforehand. You will also be asked to sign a waiver prior to taking the test.
The Senior Officers Interview
A panel of Senior Police Officers and a Human Resources Department representative will conduct a formal interview. The interview normally takes approximately 45 minutes.
If you have made it through all the above stages successfully then congratulations! You may now receive a formal offer of employment.
Training
Successful applicants are appointed as Recruit Constables for six months, during which time they receive a structured program of training and are continuously assessed. They need to acquire the skills and the confidence to work well as Police Officers.
- The initial training lasts 26 weeks. The new Recruit Constables are given intensive training, both in the classroom and on patrol with experienced Tutor Officers, before being allowed to patrol alone. The first eight weeks are an induction into the Police Force and is classroom based with the Training Department and Senior Officer of the RTCIPF. During this time, the Recruit Constables complete administration matters and are exposed to various aspects of policing, including first aid and officer safety training. During these first eight weeks, the Recruit Constables are not allowed to leave the training school grounds, unless authorised by the Training School Commander.
- The Recruits Constables will be exposed to various approaches of policing to perform their daily tasks as trained Police Officers. This training will be followed by a Passing-out Ceremony, which is a proud and significant time for the Recruit Constables, their family and friends.
- After graduation, the Police Constables will patrol with an experienced Tutor Constable, putting newly acquired skills into practice. This period of probation serves as a means of assessing their continuing progress as new Police Constables. If the new Police Constables successfully meet the required standard, they will proceed to the status of independent patrol and will be allowed to work as a Police Constable without personal tutoring.
