Pedestrian safety continues to be a major priority for the Royal Turks & Caicos Islands Police Force. In an effort to end accidents involving pedestrians, TCI Police are urging the public to adhere to the following pedestrian safety tips:
-
Be predictable. Use sidewalks where provided. Cross or enter streets where it is legal to do so.
-
If a sidewalk is closed due to construction, cross the street and use the sidewalk on the other side or find a safe alternate route out of traffic.
-
If walking at night, make it easy for drivers to see you, dress in light colors and wear reflective materials.
-
Make eye contact with drivers before crossing to be sure that they see you!
-
Alcohol and drugs can impair your ability to walk safely, just like it affects a person’s ability to drive.
-
It is not advisable to walk across multiple lanes but if you do it is at your own risk.
-
Cross at marked crosswalks or intersections. Vehicles most often hit pedestrians when they cross the road at places other than intersections.
-
Look Left, Right and Left for traffic. Stop at the curb and look left, right and left again for traffic. Stopped at the curb signals drivers that you intend to cross.
-
If a vehicle is parked where you are crossing make sure there is no driver in the vehicle. Then go to the edge of the vehicle and look left, right, left until no vehicles are coming. Keep looking for vehicles while you are crossing.
-
Be alert.
